What are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)? Do I need them on keto?

PUFA stands for polyunsaturated fatty acids. The most well-known polyunsaturated fatty acids are the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6. It is important to pay attention to the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio – too much omega-6 leads to inflammation (it acts like an accelerator pedal in the body, while omega-3 is the brake) [1].

Optimize the balance by avoiding vegetable oils and processed or deep fried foods high in omega-6 and eat plenty of omega-3 rich sources such as salmon, mackerel, or sardines. You can also supplement with an omega-3 oil like fermented cod liver oil or krill oil.
