Can a ketogenic diet cause diarrhea?

When adapting to the ketogenic diet, it is normal to experience a change in your bowel movements, which for some people includes a period of loose stools or diarrhea. This is not unusual and will improve in a couple of days [1]. It's usually a result of low levels of fat-digesting enzymes, lack of fiber, and electrolyte imbalances.

If you are experiencing diarrhea, try the following:

  • Drink more water

  • Up your electrolytes

  • Start using probiotics and fermented foods

  • Add more fiber to your diet

  • Use digestive enzymes

  • Increase the variety of fats in your diet

  • Eat smaller meals

Also consider getting tested for allergies, food sensitivities, parasites or SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).
