Is a ketogenic diet safe for the kidneys?

Published on: April 23, 2018

Some people are concerned that keto will put the at risk of kidney stones. This concern comes mainly from the misconception that keto is a high-protein diet. Diets too high in animal protein are known to increase your risk of kidney stones [1]. Luckily, the ketogenic diet doesn't call for excess protein. A moderate intake of around 50 grams daily is all you need to stay healthy on keto [2].

If you do have kidney problems, discuss any changes with your healthcare provider and monitor your health carefully. Everybody's health and metabolism are unique and can respond differently. Kidney health is extremely important whether you're on a keto diet or not. They flush out waste and toxins and balance your body's pH, blood pressure, electrolytes, etc. So do take care of your kidney health through health eating and monitoring.
